This Packet Includes Everything you Need to have a Donut Day!!!
(It is perfect for one of the first few days of school to get kids excited, the last day to keep them going, to turn donuts for Dad into an all day donut day, or any day in between!)
Invitations: Send /Give students an invitation to get them excited about the day!
Writing: There are lots of options here… You could make donuts with your kids using an oven or one of those cute little donut makers, you could make them at home and bring the recipe to share with kids, or you could watch a you tube video of how donuts are made and write the steps! Best news!!!! Pillsbury has come out with a box mix for donut holes and there are 3 different kinds!!! So much easier! Have students write the steps on the flow chart as you go and then have them take those steps to write a paragraph with a good beginning, middle, and end. Use the handout that is included to explain a good paragraph!
Science: Donut Taste Test using the scientific method!!! You will need two different brands of donuts for this experiment. It is set up for many different levels of scientist. There is one version where students just fill in the blanks and an other where they can do all their own “thinking”. You can also decide if you want to do the taste test with students or invite teachers in and do it with teachers! You could use different brands of chocolate or powdered sugar and have them bought ahead of time or you could do glaze donuts from different shops in town!
Math: Donut Graphing: There is a blank data table, a blank bar graph, and a blank picture graph for your class to gather information on their favorite kinds of donuts. This is a great getting to know you activity. If it is later in the year or anytime there is also a completed picture and bar graph with analyzing questions to go with them. There is also a scaled bar and picture graph for 3rd graders or for DI.
Reading: Read “The History of Donuts” and make a time-line to connect the events in a historical text. Have students highlight the events in their text to prove their answers! Students can either fill in the time-line on their own or they can use the premade cards to glue on the time-line in the correct spots!
This packet could easily be extended past one day! To complete the test taste science experiment you will have to purchase donuts. For the writing portion you can either make donuts with the kids or watch a youtube video!
