This is an environmental science lab that simulates strip mining by mining the cream out of a donut. The donuts have different types and amounts of cream, ore. Groups first plan on where to mine by drilling cores with a straw; remove the overburden (cake on top), mine the ore, either sell the overburden or return it. They make their decisions based on profit during the lab, and in the conclusion, they predict how their decisions affected the ecosystem and surrounding community. They also develop a method of making mining more environmentally friendly. This is an inquiry - cookbook hybrid which means that some of the procedures are student designed.
