Discussing Controversial Topics
Nothing is as powerful as when young Thinkers can engage in thoughtful debate with one another. But as the teacher, this is often difficult to moderate. Young people need to be taught how to engage in critical dialogue. They are surrounded by poor examples of debate; from message boards all the way through the highest ranks of government. In a world that often limits them to 140 characters, learning to express a clear, concise opinion supported by facts is a critical skill.
These guidelines will help to create a classroom culture where differing views are both respected and celebrated. Post the guidelines in your classroom or have students keep them handy so that they can be frequently revisited throughout the school year.
