Dos Caras by Sabine Ulibarrí is a great example of Chicano Literature. It's a police story that makes wonderful connections to the Mexican culture with descriptive passages for food that leave you hungry for Mexican food!
In addition, the author describes beautifully the colorful landscape of New Mexico. I take this opportunity to make a connection to the Manifest Destiny and the Mexican American War.
I remind students that the states in the Southwest were Mexican Territory in addition to many other states. I ask students if they can name the states and the student that recalls of them gets an extra two points on the quiz for this story.
