These card sorts were designed for students to use after experiences solving addition and subtraction equations with snap or unifix cubes. For the card sorts to be most effective, allow students to work in pairs to solve them. This creates discussion which will provide an environment for evaluation (one of Bloom's higher levels of thinking). In each card sort, there is an extra card which is meant to create more discussion among student pairs. The extra card may look like the match to another card. This was done in order to target discussion around some misconceptions students may develop with addition and subtraction.

These card sorts have been used with first graders, but could also be used with second graders.

1.NBT 4 Add within 100...using concrete models...
2.NBT.5 Fluently add and subtract within 10 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
