Thanks for checking out my double digit multiplication strategy! When I worked with my students on solving double digit by double digit multiplication, the panic on their faces when they tried to learn the steps was alarming, and it was clear I needed to create something fun with movement for them to learn. I came up with this chant/rhyme and we’ve been rocking math ever since! Students that have trouble remembering the correct order of steps and students who have learning disabilities that affect their ability to memorize amazingly remembered this chant and dance and were incredible in their math work! My students and I have had so much fun with this and even created a dance for a fun, interactive method to remember this strategy. I’ve taken this strategy and have done almost everything with it— made cards with each step, raced as a team to put steps in correct order to solve, laminated these sheets for dry erase marker work, videotaped my students performing their chant/dance, worked problems out with this on the sidewalk near our building, created board games using this strategy to roll and solve, and more.
The first page shows students each step of a problem solved. The next page shows the steps but requires students to write in the multiplication answers for each step (guided practice). The following seven pages have double digit problems to solve with the strategy steps on the sides of the sheets to refer to. The last page has the strategy steps and a blank center so you can laminate or put in page protectors and have kids write their own problems and solve while referring to the strategy. I hope you and your students have as much fun with it as we have!
