Purpose: Often students approach reading ill-equipped to break down complex texts. Therefore, students either do not perform well on assignments and assessments that require reading complex texts or worse, they don’t identify as readers and they shy away from reading all together. Students need tools to help them engage difficult texts and build their reading endurance, but they need tools that are used in a way which does not take away from the enjoyment that comes from reading. Both the Non-fiction and Fiction Double Entry Journal Booklets as well as the Unique Stuff one page sheets are designed to help the reader capture the essence of a given text, yet in a way that is not so burdensome to cause the students to become overwhelmed. Preserving the enjoyment of reading is equally as important as building the skills for good reading. These tools can be used with both reluctant & struggling readers as well as with advanced readers. They can be applied to any story (Large or Small), book, article or even poetry and can be used as independent reading assignments or with whole class instruction. Educators can also collect adequate formative assessment data by reviewing the responses at the beginning, middle and end of the booklets or by scoring the responses captured on the Unique Stuff one page sheets.
