This journal activity is perfect for literature circles and/or novel studies. Based on Adrienne Gear's Reading Power strategies, students will show what they know by completing the during and after reading sections. Students are required to make connections to the text, ask questions, make inferences using evidence from the text to support their thinking, and record detailed facts. I have students complete the 'during reading' sections while working individually. During group discussion they complete the 'after reading' sections by listening to the contributions of each group member and recording anything that sticks out to them. I have found that this approach makes for excellent discussions as students come prepared with points already prepared to share with group members.
