Using doubles facts can be a challenge if your students don't know them! Develop fluency by having students learn their doubles facts by heart. These doubles facts can be used to solve other addition facts by recognizing them as near doubles facts.
I designed this product because there were several lessons in the 1st grade math curriculum that asked students to use double facts to quickly compute other addition facts. (i.e. They can solve 6+7 if they had memorized 6+6=12.)
The problem was that my 1st graders didn’t know these doubles facts. My students were really practicing addition for the first time, especially with sums up to 20. It took them just as much time to find their sum than it did to find the sum of the “near doubles facts.”
This resource gives students a fun way to practice these doubles facts so they can benefit from these lessons. Your curriculum may include using doubles facts as part of CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.C.6. (Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten; decomposing a number leading to a ten; using the relationship between addition and subtraction; and creating equivalent but easier or known sums.)
Furthermore, it’s supportive of the 2nd grade standards CCSS.Math.Content.2.OA.B.2 (Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.)
