Do you have student that struggle to understand and apply the 1 + 1 + 1 and 2 + 1 + 1 spelling rules? Use this card game to help students practice using and applying the Doubling Up Rule for final consonants. Recommended for THIRD, FOURTH, FIFTH, SIXTH Grades.

What’s Included

  1. Card game
  2. Word family cards for word wall or instruction.
  3. Rules cards for word wall or instruction.
  4. Vocabulary worksheet for instruction. (Students may either save these in a binder or glue them in a vocabulary notebook.)

How To Play

- 2-4 players attempt to build words and score the most points. Players need to use strategy in order to build longer words, as longer words score more points.

- Doubling Up includes both base words that double the final consonant and do not double the final consonant. This forces players to think about and apply the rule throughout the game.

Better Game Play

​​To enjoy the game, it is important that students have some background in the 1 + 1 + 1 and 2 + 1 + 1 rules, as well as knowledge of the word families. This resource includes Rules Cards, as well as Word Family Cards for each base word that can be built in this game. (See preview for pictures.) These cards can be used to teach each the word family and then hung for a word wall.

The prefixes and suffixes that are included can be used with more than one root word. Wild cards and doubled letters are also included in the game to facilitate word building.
