A chemistry activity that uses vinegar and baking soda is described that shows how doubling the reactants in a reaction will double the amount of the product, in this case carbon dioxide. Through the activity, students will also determine if vinegar or baking soda is the limiting reactant in this bubbly reaction. The steps of the demonstration are listed in an easy-to-follow procedure. Ideal for middle school science teachers, but other grade level teachers could use the resource as well.
The procedure and result table are included on a page as a stand-alone assignment or can be incorporated into interactive lab notebooks.
In addition, there are descriptions of a simple inquiry activity on the effects of detergents on the reaction and how to make foam towers in 100 ml graduated cylinders! This is great visual fun!
