This nine page reading, writing, and graphing activity addresses the basic cause of Down syndrome in relation to abnormal meiosis and nondisjunction. It addresses the symptoms of Down syndrome as well as the medical techniques used to identify a fetus with Down syndrome prior to birth. Bioethical considerations of the testing procedure are also considered. The activity culminates.in providing students with the opportunity to organize data in a chart and then accurately graph that data. as well as to construct an appropriate scale for their graph. This activity has been correlated to the Next Generation Science Standards, cross cutting Common Core writing standards as well as appropriate Common Core Math Standards. New York State Living Environment performance indicators are also included for teachers in New York State. These standards and performance indicators are listed on the last page of the activity.
