I am a special education teacher and I have used Dr. Fry's List of 1,000 Words for years to assess and increase word knowledge and fluency with my students. Several years ago I found a list of Dr. Fry phrases and added the phrases to my fluency piece. I made my own list of the twenty-four phrase groups (in large print, one phrase group to a page) to assess and keep track of student progress. I also made phrase rings for each of the twenty-four phrase groups. At the beginning of the school year, I copy the phrase groups, back-to-back, one set for each of my special ed students. I generally assess and teach the phrase groups one at a time. I use each student's list to note progress in reading, and record timed readings of each group. Once fluency with one group of phrases is established, I move on to the next group of Dr. Fry phrases. The enclosed file contains 111 pages. The first 24 pages are Dr. Fry's phrase groups. The remaining pages are spaced to allow the phrases to be cut and pasted on index cards to make one phrase ring for each group.
