Dr. Martin Luther King “I Have a Dream” Speech Scavenger Hunt where students take a closer look at the speech by "hunting" or identifying all of the different writing strategies Dr. King employed when drafting his famous speech. By identifying the tools of persuasion, students will be able to both gain deeper understanding of the speech itself as well as utilize more sophisticated methods of persuasion in their own writing.
There are also optional questions that connect this speech to Loraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun. This lesson can be used to demonstrate methods of persuasion, explore historical rhetoric, celebrate Dr. King or use as a primary document as a supplemental while teaching A Raisin in the Sun. If you are not doing A Raisin in the Sun simply omit questions 18-22. I have included the answer key to all questions. I have had extraordinary success with this activity as a writing or literature lesson.
