Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Collaborative Classroom Poster. This is a great, inclusive, community-building Martin Luther King Day activity. Appropriate accompaniment for your Black History Month studies or any unit/lesson on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., civil rights, social justice, etc. This poster of Dr. King is a great way to start a unit or to finish one.

My collaboration posters are easy for teachers and fun for kids and make a lasting impression—on students, parents, and your entire school community! Large and visually striking, this poster is the perfect accompaniment to your Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and/or Black History Month studies. It makes a great display for the front office, the auditorium, a hallway, or your classroom. No matter where it ends up, it will engender unending compliments and conversations while proving a source of inspiration for your students and school community.

The collaborative aspect of this Dr. King poster makes a big impact without really having to say anything. Every single piece of the poster matters, just as every child in the class matters. Your students will walk by and say "I did that piece!" each time they see the poster. They take great pride in being part of this art project.

Differentiation is built into the design of this poster. Some pages have more to color than others, so some kids will easily be able to color two pages. Other pages have a lot of little details to color. You can use this to differentiate and provide the appropriate experience for each child to achieve success and be part of the group.

This resource contains two methods for making a classroom MLK poster. One is a bit more challenging than the other—great for differentiation! I have included both options so you can decide what works best for your class. I also include a bonus "unscramble the drawing" worksheet in this lesson.

This poster is included in my Black History Month Collaborative Portraits Bundle: Set 1.

There are two options for the two posters:

  • Use pieces A1-E4 for 20 pieces—yielding a final poster approx. 28"x 35"
  • Use all pieces A1-F4 for 24 pieces—yielding a final poster approx. 28" x 42"

Option #1 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Classroom Collaboration Poster: Coloring

  • Great for Elementary students.

This lesson is very easy for teachers. Each student is given one section of a large mosaic poster to color according to the instructions on each sheet. Once all sheets are colored and cut out, they are then assembled to reveal a large multi-colored mosaic/poster/mural of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that well-captures the essence of Dr. King's "dream."

Option #2: MLK Jr. Classroom Grid Drawing Collaboration Poster: Drawing

  • Ideal for Middle and High School Students

This lesson is more challenging than the coloring version (option #1). This makes option #2 an appropriate and excellent lesson for older students, art teachers, or students who want to take this poster a step further.

In this lesson, each student will draw their grid piece using a small version of their assigned grid cell as a reference. The classroom poster can be assembled once the pieces are drawn and cut out. This lesson engenders a lot of cooperation among students to get all of the drawings within the individual grid cells to line up nicely and produce a nice-looking final poster of Dr. King that teaches students that every student is essential in collaboration.

The results from both posters are stunning!!

"Unscramble" Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. handouts

These handouts are great because they allow students to each walk away with their own drawing of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It's an excellent extension for when students finish their work early as it can be done independently. You can find more of my unscramble activities HERE.

FREE Sample from Brain Waves Instruction Included in this poster is a sample from Brain Waves Instruction to help you integrate art and English Language arts even more! You will find the free sample included in this resource to help your students analyze quotes from Martin Luther King. jr.
