Product Description
This lesson plan and assignment is a 3-5 day activity. It meets the new Common Core standards for reading more complex texts and drawing text support to write meaningful responses and analysis of text. In this assignment, students will read two texts, one nonfiction and one fiction. The nonfiction text is the famous speech given by Senator Robert F. Kennedy, "On the Death of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr." The fiction text is the newly written poem by Maya Angelou, "Abundant Hope," which she wrote and read at the new Dr. King Memorial. I provide hyperlinks to both texts so that you can print and use them. Students will then write a paired passage essay on both texts. This product provides the lesson plans and the materials (graphic organizers, original reading activity sheets, writing assignment, and other suggestions).
