The best part of this is that if you want to use the book titles but change the activity, YOU CAN! The file allows you to create your own descriptions based on those titles for both weeks. If you choose to keep them as is, you just need to add a date to whichever one you choose! Also, included are two blank color posters if you want to create your own week from scratch! You just add your own font!
Seuss Quote of the Day with a Fun Fact-In this part of the product can be used for the month of March or for the week of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Half sheets of paper are scripts that you can read on your morning announcements that contain a fact about Seuss and then a quote from one of his books. Kids are then challenged to write down the title of the book the quote or excerpt comes from on a slip of paper (included). Then at the end of the day, the title of the book is revealed on the announcements and a slip of paper is drawn and the winner’s name is announced. I give a prize each day. Amazon has great, inexpensive bookmarks, pencils, and the like. The scripts could be printed and laminated and put on a ring for use. I put them in order and there are 22 days worth of facts and quotes. You don’t have to use them all or go in any order but there is enough for a month’s worth.
Two bulletin boards are included as well; one is full of facts about Dr. Seuss and the other is quotes from 17 of his books. Both come with banners and complement the announcements with the scripts. You can display the boards all at once or gradually add to them. The board with the book quotes also comes with a form that can be used as a school-wide contest. Kids read the quotes and write the title on the corresponding form. You could have winners from primary grades and upper grades. The bulletin board with quotes comes with a book talk form where you can assign kids certain quotes and they can read the book and then do a book talk on the given book.
Also included are activities that can be adapted for a wide range of learners.
1. What are the lessons? This is something that can be done in pairs, groups, or individually. It is two pages of quotes from Dr. Seuss books. You can either copy it back to back and distribute or have half the kids do one sheet and half do the other. They read the quote and then decide what the lesson is. You could also have them read all the books mentioned first and then have them complete the sheet. You will want to have multiple copies of each title. They can then share. Answer key included.
2.My Favorite Dr. Seuss Book this is a template that they can create a cover of their favorite Seuss book. Then they can cut them out and you can hang them on a bulletin board.
3. How Many Can You Name? This is a fun game to play in teams. Decide on a set amount of time. Kids then work together to write as many titles of Dr. Seuss books as they can without the internet. When time is up, choose one team to read their list. For every title they read, if other teams have the same title, everyone crosses it off their list. The team that has the most titles at the end wins. Repeats are cross-outs!
4. Letters to Seuss Characters-This activity is a culminating one once you have read many Dr. Seuss books. Kids brainstorm characters from the read aloud you have done and then they choose a character to write to. Once all letters are written, kids then select a letter to then respond to as the Dr. Seuss character! There are no right or wrong responses, just fun, and imagination.
My Favorite Dr. Seuss book requires kids to create a cover of their favorite Seuss book and then write a summary of that book.
5. The last activity is designed so that you can decide how to use it. It is a blank open book.
Some ideas might include:
writing their own ending to a Seuss book and try their hand at rhyming;
collecting quotes from different books and writing them;
illustrating a favorite part and writing why it is their favorite;
Drawing the characters, setting, problem, and solution;
Writing a book recommendation for a favorite Seuss book;
comparing two Seuss books or characters and writing about them
Possibilities are endless!
