Fluency is the key to successful reading, and so the jaunty rhythm and uneven meter of this poem force students to pause, think about and then read the poem again and again. The key is repetition until the poem is read fluently! As an added bonus, the theme deals with a common childhood fear: being afraid of the dark, and how to overcome it. These poems, like all my other work, reflect 44 years' worth of experience teaching reading to gifted as well as reluctant readers, ivy league bound students and those who can barely make it through elementary school, and are sure to please and help your students benefit as no other material can. All I ask is that you give them a try!
