Instructions:
1. Break your class into small groups and choose a great book for each group.
2. Meet with each group to assign a section of the book to be read during the week and a different assignment for each member of the group.
3. Agree on a day and time for a literature circle meeting.
4. Throughout the week, students should be reading the assigned section of the book and working on the paper assignment that they are responsible to share at the meeting.
5. When it is time for the group to meet, the students should take turns sharing their prepared assignment and allowing for feedback and discussion among the members of the group.
6. After all students have shared their assignment and the group has enjoyed a discussion of this section of the book, repeat steps 2 and following.
There are more jobs available than you will need for one group. Choose the jobs that are most connected with what you are teaching in your reading lessons or most pertinent to the book being read. It is also possible to assign each student two jobs for the week.
