This is an assignment that I use with my grade 11 and 12 senior drama students, because it's much more complex and requires the skills they've developed over previous years in drama.
Sometimes this is assigned as their final performance exam, depending on what I've covered in the course.
This assignment asks students to both WRITE and PERFORM a short 1 minute monologue based off a photograph they're assigned.
Included in this package is:
-An assignment sheet
-A rubric to make marking easy for you
-Two pages of "stock photos" of people - of course you can find your own suitable to your class - there's loads of free ones online to use!
It focuses on "THE NEED TO TELL" - the idea that a character speaks for a reason - and they have to develop this reason through their writing and rehearsals.
Students really come up with brilliant performances because they get to build their own characters. It's a really challenging and enlightening project!
TIP - don't go too young or too old with the photographs for their characters unless you have a really strong student- it's hard to show the physicality of such characters!
