This is a really guided play review assignment that works for either juniors or seniors - I tend to use it with every grade.
Part of the curriculum involves watching live theatre, so this works great to help fulfill this expectation.
After watching a play, either on a class trip, or one that we perform during school, students are asked to write a play review.
(this could also easily be applied to a movie you've watched in class)
It asks them to write 4 paragraphs and breaks it down for them, step-by-step:
-A paragraph on the information from the playbill/program/website
-A paragraph on the synopsis, theme, and conflict
-A paragraph critiquing one theatrical element
-A final paragraph stating if they'd recommend it or not
A rubric is also included to make marking easy for you.
TIP - before they start, I get them to research their favourite or most hated movie on IMDB.com or Rottentomates.com and read reviews....they'll see how passionate people get about their opinions! It helps them see how to back up their opinions (plus it's really fun)
Hope this helps!
