This is so so so important for them to know, so I cover it during the first two weeks of drama class - it'll fit into any unit that we do (which is why it's important!!!!)
This handout explains SUBTEXT, or the hidden meaning behind words.
It goes through what subtext is (the visual of the iceberg is a PERFECT example of this) and different ways we can create meaning through SAYING words.
Example - "I'm fine" can be said so many different ways to mean soooooo many different things.
They need to understand that HOW we say things matters to the meaning!
This handout can also used as a workshop - to go through different ways of communicating.
Here's what I do as a follow-up lesson to compliment this:
TIP -I've used it in both my Drama classes (part of of Voice unit or part of script work), and as part of English class when we're studying plays such as Shakespeare.
