Use the Literature Tableau Vivant to review reading for any text! Great for your kinesthetic learners and theatrical students, it’s drama without the action and dialogue. Additionally, this lesson prepares your students to meet the expectations of Common Core by requiring students to provide text-based evidence in a short literary analysis essay.
Here is an overview for the lesson:
Prepare students by first having them journal and model poses; afterwards, have them brainstorm scenes for their dramatic displays. Next, assign students into groups which plan and present the scenes. During the planning, students also complete close readings of the text and provide quotations to support their presentations. While each group presents its “living picture,” lead the rest of the class in discussion of each scene. Finally, have the students write short literary analysis essays which demonstrate how one of the presentations demonstrated a scene from the text.
