Do you ever find that your students consistently associate science with explosions, test tubes, and Einstein-esque mad scientists? If so, you may be battling a large, over-arching problem within society today - our children don't see themselves within STEM fields.
If your classroom is anything like mine, when you ask your students what they want to be when the grow up they probably answer with fields that are familiar to them - doctors, teachers, lawyers, police officers, veterinarians, etc. Of course these fields are wonderful and we them, but with the workforce changing so rapidly, I often ask myself if I am doing enough to educate them about STEM fields.
I developed this activity to show students that in spite of how we usually perceive scientist, we ourselves use the same scientific practices within our everyday lives. This fun and engaging lesson allows students to begin picturing themselves within empowering STEM science fields.
