    Description

These two art lessons are good for high school or middle school art classes. They teach students how to draw and shade ellipses in perspective. The video demonstrations, presentations, handouts, and worksheets can be shared with your students via Google Classroom.

The first cross contour project points out common mistakes and shows how the ellipse changes at different points of view. Students create a cross contour drawing of a still life of Styrofoam cups. All the reference images are included. These photos can also be used for the second project which focuses on shading ellipses.

This cross contour line drawing pen and ink project contains:

    • a video demonstration showing students how to use cross contour lines to describe the form of the objects.
    • A handout on ellipse drawing
    • A worksheet to practice using technique
    • All the reference photos for students to draw from

The second project describes proper shading technique using value and building up layers of dark to create a wide range of tone. Students use graphite or charcoal to create a drawing from white objects containing ellipses. This assignment builds on the previous as students now add value to show dimension to the forms. The objects are all white on a white background so students can see how light creates tones on the forms.

This ellipse drawing and shading assignment contains:

    • A video demonstration showing students how to sketch their still life to scale and shade using proper technique.
    • A handout on shading
    • A worksheet to practice shading ellipses
    • All the reference photos to draw from

The reference photos that are included in both lessons can be used interchangably. You will get 43 different images of white objects that contain ellipses and white objects. They all vary in complexity making it easy to modify for students of different ability levels.

All of my lessons can be shared with your students through Google Classroom or any digital platform and are formatted to work for distance learning or in the classroom. They are designed to save you time and help your students access the tutorials, presentations, videos, or worksheets as easily as possible. You can find more ready to go, easy to follow, timesaving art lessons in my TPT SHOP.
