PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This book is for students with reading and listening comprehension deficits. It is ideal for visual and kinesthetic learners, particularly those who love to draw, but it can be beneficial for students with other learning preferences and interests as well. It covers the California fourth grade Social Studies standards, which cover California history. Each page of this book contains a sentence about an event or concept relating to California history.

Lesson Materials

1 copy of this book
1 blank drawing book for each student
colored markers or pencils for each student

Using this Book

Students create their own visual history books using captions provided in this book and their own drawings based on those captions. Go in order and discuss the sentence on each page of this book. When you’re sure everyone understands the concept, have the students copy the sentence into their blank books and then do a drawing of what the sentence says. The white pages in this book are section dividers with titles. Have the students copy the titles as well so they’ll have an organized pictorial account of the history.

Assessment

After completing each section, have the students present their drawings and describe what they represent. This book provides a rubric you can use to gauge progress. Also, you might want to keep a video record of the presentations to accompany the drawings for student portfolios.
