About This Lesson:
Use as a supplement to teaching students about the characteristics of Picasso’s Cubist portraits. This activity offers a hands-on approach to the elements of what Cubist painters sought to accomplish.
Not only does it teach in the area of art but students get a step-by-step drawing lesson, line for line, in a timed fashion. It’s a lesson in focusing, using time efficiently, and following directions while acquiring basic drawing skills by copying work by a master artist. Even students who feel challenged artistically will be encouraged to participate in this activity.
There are 3 checkpoints for students to stop and assess where they are during the lesson. The duration of each task card is about 30 to 45 seconds, which is adequate for drawing and making corrections (This has been tested). Because the cards transition automatically, this allows you time to check on how each student is progressing and ensuring they stay on task. It will last the entire class period (35 minutes). You can conclude the activity by allowing students to compare and discuss their drawings.
Great activity for students to work independently. The other perk is there's nothing to print. Just provide students with paper and pencil and let the tasks begin!
