Dred Scott Close Reading, Mapping Activity, and Summary Writing
This comprehensive lesson focuses on Dred Scott and the controversial Supreme Court decision that denied him his freedom. Students will complete a close reading of the included informational text detailing Dred Scott's life. Following the close reading is a mapping activity, which guides students through Dred Scott's movement across free and slave boundary lines. Finally, students will have an opportunity to summarize the Dred Scott case by writing a newspaper article as a journalist in 1857.
