This is a fun lab because you can use it at so many grade levels and for so many different topics. You can throw it in anywhere! Students will see how many drops of water each side of a penny will hold. You can use this lab when teaching scientific method (variables), chemistry (surface tension, cohesion), or to reinforce graphing and scientific testing skills. It is fun for students to come up with their own variables and test them as extensions (tap water vs. distilled, dirty penny vs. clean, etc). Materials needed for each group: Penny, eye-dropper, water, petri dish or similar container, and a beaker. Almost no prep and cleanup!
