Looking for a great way for your students to work together while partaking in cardio drumming activities focused on creating rhythms? Then my Drum Tiles are for you!
Print out, laminate and cut in half however many sheets of each of the 6 patterns you need for your teaching situation (for my situation with about 30 kids in a class, I printed out 8 of each page to have plenty to spare).
Gym Set Up:
Drum tiles laying on the floor, face down, in the center of the gym. Cardio drumming equipment (base, ball and sticks…enough for each student to have their own set) set up in clusters of 4, with space in between each cluster, around the perimeter of the gym. Display the symbol legend on a large poster or via a projector and screen for the students to see.
Have students get into groups of 4 (or as close to it as possible). Once in groups, have each group go over to their own cluster of cardio drumming equipment. Each group needs to get 8 drum tiles total at random (no peeking to see what the symbol is on the card) to bring back to the area where they are working. Once all 8 drum tiles are acquired, the group then needs to begin discussing what order they want to put the tiles in. Encourage them to work together. Once the group has made their order and it is laid out in a line, the group can now begin practicing their 8 beat drum tile rhythm that was just created. Each drum tile counts as 1 beat within the rhythm. As the teacher, don’t play any music yet…allow the groups to practice the pattern to learn it first. Upon practicing their rhythm, allow to change some of the tiles around to help their rhythm flow better if they feel its necessary. Encourage the groups to keep practicing their 8 beat rhythm over and over. Once you as the teacher feel like the groups have learned their rhythms well, add in the music and count the class in so they all start playing at the same time. See if they can keep their rhythms to the beat of the song you are playing.
If groups show that they have mastered playing their 8 beat rhythm to the music, rotate the groups 1 spot around the perimeter of the gym. Each group will now have a new rhythm to learn and try to master!
