Students always enjoy reading and learning about the background knowledge of WWI through this poem. knowing the horrors of WWI chemical warfare and then reading extremely descriptive detail really engages them. This lesson guides students through a informational reading of the author and the story behind this poem. It allows them to dissect the poem (through guided annotations which are also available) and determine the function of each stanza.
Students discover the author's argument and look at the imagery that was used to convince the audience. This author appeals with emotions not logic.
Students are then asked to find a topic that they want to argue through a narrative poem and complete a five senses chart before writing. Document is editable if you want to change the length requirement.
