This is a guided viewing worksheet for Christopher Nolan's 2017 film Dunkirk. It is designed to keep the students engaged and focused as they watch this exciting and educational film. The assignment is broken up into four separate parts. Each part is separated by page so that it may be easily added or removed to fit the time constraints of your classroom. The segments included are as follows:
Section 1: "Pre-Viewing Questions"
-This section is designed to engage the students prior to beginning the film and provide them with the proper historical context for the events in the film. It consists of five short answer questions that the students can easily research online prior to viewing the film in class. These questions focus on the events immediately preceding the evacuation of Dunkirk as well as statistics and information that will make viewing Dunkirk more rewarding.
Section 2: "Character Key"
-In this segment, students match the names of each character with a small thumbnail image of them. The purpose is to give the students a proper key for use in the next two sections as they watch the film and complete their essay. While most of these questions are matching, several characters in Dunkirk are not specifically named in the film. Their titles have been taken from the films credits and script and have been filled in for the students in order to facilitate discussion.
Section 3: "Notes on Dunkirk's Film Structure" and "Guided Viewing"
-This section is the bulk of the assignment. It consists of three questions that give students insight into Dunkirk's non-linear storytelling and thirty-five short answer questions that follow the plot and events of the film. Questions occur every few minutes and are detailed enough so as to require attentive viewing on the part of the students.
Section 4: "Essay"
-This section comprises of a single essay question that encourages the students to get into the mindset of one of the films characters and evaluate the success or failure of Dunkirk through their eyes.
Lastly a detailed key is included for all sections except the essay portion.
