This visual letter discrimination intervention card game is designed for students who have difficulty recognizing and producing the short a sound when reading CVC words. There are no -an or -am words included (only true short a words). This intervention can be provided as a center activity for independent practice once the game is taught. Students having difficulty should be monitored or paired with a partner who has mastered the skill. It is very simple. Students put the cards face down and then mix them up. The first player picks a card, flips it over and reads the word. They continue choosing cards until they get a “SPILL!” Card. The SPILL! Card indicates that it is the end of the student’s turn and that player keeps all of the cards that they have gathered throughout their turn. The next player goes. Whoever has the most cards after all of the cards have been picked up is the winner of the game. This game is intended for K-2 students but I have used it with my 3rd graders.
