Dystopian Literature Circles: Introduction to Dystopian Literature and Literature Circle Resources

SUBJECT: English, Language Arts, Reading, Literature Circles
LEVEL: Middle School, High School

With popular teen novels like The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Giver, Dystopian Literature is becoming more and more popular with Middle School and High School students. Because of this, choosing this genre to focus on for a literature circle assignment is an engaging choice. Students are exposed to a wide variety of titles in this genre, and are often inspired to not only read their group’s novel, but the other group’s novels as well!

This package contains a detailed introduction to Dystopian Literature, as well as all of the handouts and resources needed to complete a 3 week literature circle unit with your class. Very little teacher prep is needed – simply print and teach!

This creative and engaging package includes the following:

Dystopian Literature title page template: A blank title page template is included, for students to create a title page for their unit on Dystopian Literature.

Introduction to Dystopian Literature: Several pages of class notes on Dystopian Literature is included. This included information on the difference between a dystopia and a utopia, dystopian protagonists, and key elements of Dystopian Literature. Propaganda examples and blank students note taking templates to go along with the class notes are also included. These notes are a great tool for students to refer back to throughout the unit.

Dystopian Literature Circle Resources: Everything needed to run a 3 week literature circle unit is included. Students are provided with a detailed step by step plan for running their groups. Each group member is assigned a different role for each meeting, and must complete a specific handout relating to their role – this holds them accountable for the reading and makes sure they have something to talk about. This package also included group evaluation sheets, novel choice ideas, and more!
