Thank you for visiting Piccolo Sue Books. Each of these stories and songs is very special to me, and I appreciate every kind person who takes the time to read, share, and learn more about them. I knew music would be an important part of my life when I was six years old. My first grade teacher brought a flute to class, and I was instantly hooked. I owe more than I could ever repay to the guidance and support of my own teachers.
Following high school, I attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois as a flute performance major <3. For nearly two years, I studied with the same musicians I spent my childhood and adolescence admiring. It was a unique opportunity that I feel both lucky and blessed to have ever had. To offset the cost of books and other fees, I participated in a work study program where I spent each afternoon in the university's slide library. Along with the school's many offerings, I loved being a part of that wonderful library. It helped me financially, but it was also there that I developed a passion for the visual arts.
While at Northwestern, I began to see the world a little differently. I lived my life until that point with tunnel vision for music and performance. During the winter of my sophomore year, I started to feel an undeniable calling on my life to become a teacher. Knowing the path to becoming an educator would look very different from the path to a degree in performance, I made the difficult decision to transfer. I carry always the kindness and encouragement shown to me by the amazing faculty, students, and friends I met during that formative time.
Five years after transferring, I learned that the credits I earned at Northwestern would be exactly what I needed to add an instrumental music certification to my teaching certificate, leading to a life of helping the youngest students discover the joys of creating and sharing music.
After completing my undergraduate degree at Louisiana Tech University, I met my wonderful husband. And we are both very grateful to raise our family surrounded by the love and support of a most gracious community.
I am very excited for the opportunity to share more of my music and lessons with others through this children's series inspired by my own life experiences.
Thank you so much again for taking the time to visit. I hope you enjoy, and I'm looking forward to sharing more stories and songs very soon! <3
