This lesson introduces the idea of electronic democracy. It explores the growing trend of using the internet to vote, hold authorities accountable and otherwise reshape the global political landscape. It mentions different electronic democracy initiatives in nations such as Canada, Sweden and Estonia. The lesson then focuses on Switzerland’s current electronic democracy programs which bolster its already strong tradition of experiments with direct democracy. It also touches on the effect of social media in popular movements like the Arab Spring. The lesson includes essential questions and links to a variety of electronic democracy materials from many different perspectives. The teacher is free to modify the lesson in any manner that facilitates its use in the classroom. (This product has been very successfully classroom tested)
