The idea of these games is to introduce/reinforce initial sounds in context and to build up English vocabulary.
It is suggested that the printed sheets should be enlarged to A3 size, and be laminated or printed on card.
Dominoes game- cut the sheets along the horizontal lines, then cut each strip in half. Play by matching initial sound to the picture of the object or word beginning with the sound.
Snap game - cut along all lines play snap by matching the sound with picture/word beginning with the same sound.
These cards could also be used as a picture sound matching activity.
When placing the cards when playing dominoes and snap, the student should say the sound, name the object or read the word. This will help the students to retain vocabulary and sounds. If the student is unable to do this, other players can provide support. This encourages more peer group interaction.
The games are suitable for a wide age range of students who are at the initial stage of learning English. The games could also be used by native English speakers in lower primary.
