Products in this Bundle (2)
This small Earth Day bundle includes two resources from my store that focus on reading and vocabulary. The first is:
1) The Language of Earth Day - Informational text and student activities.
This resource includes a reading passage about the origins of Earth Day as well as the origins of some of the words associated with the celebration. It also very briefly alludes to the development of the English language.
The text has a work page including vocabulary and comprehension question activities.
A list of 34 words associated with Earth Day is also included to help students choose a word to research for the “word origin challenge”. This page is not numbered and is at the very end of this file.
A full answer key is provided for objective work.
The individual resource may be viewed in my store:
2) Earth Day Vocabulary Activities: The emphasis of this resource is on vocabulary. Most of it is suitable for grades 7 and 8 (and strong grade sixes) and could probably be useful for some grade 9 students. Please check the preview for the vocabulary lists and cloze exercises to ensure they are a good fit for your class.
This resource includes
--- Three cloze activities about Earth Day:
1) The Birth of Earth Day; 2) The First Earth Week; and 3) Earth Day Since 1970.
At the top of each of the three pages, a selection of nine vocabulary words is included for students to choose from to complete the blanks. Not only will students learn about the history of Earth Week and Earth Day, they will use context clues to complete the sentences about the commemoration of our planet and environmentalism;
--- Also included is a page for each of the cloze sections (number 1, 2, and 3) where students define the chosen nine words for each section and there is a short “word work” activity as well;
---A full answer key is provided for all six student work pages.
I created another Earth Day resource called A Brief History of Earth Day for my store a couple of years ago. I adapted the cloze activities in this resource from the informational texts I wrote for that one. I used reliable sources for the information used in the passages. That resource is more suitable for older students; this one has been adapted for middle school.
The individual resource can be seen in my store here:
