EARTH DAY math
EARTH DAY isn’t just for science class.
This resource is an engaging complement to your math class. It includes five handouts with problems in a format that encourages students to read and THINK before they can find the answers. This is an essential skill/practice that is a part of state testing and one that can never be over-practiced.
Using this resource will give your students the opportunity to apply skills they have acquired.
In addition to the awareness (Earth Day) and cross-curricular focus (science in math), I use these worksheets to encourage careful reading of math problems. Assessments follow in May and a difficult aspect of taking assessments is reading and interpreting what the problem is asking. These problems require students to read carefully before doing any math.
The included skills are usually covered before Earth Day, April 22.
SKILLS include the following:
•Percent of a Percent
•Find and use a linear model
•Identify rate in context
•Identify “years since”
These application problems can be review, refresher, or an extra challenge. You can use a few of the worksheets or all of them throughout the month of April or just for the week of Earth Day.
