This set of hearts and notes is a fantastic tool for helping children of all ages to compose songs. Children discover what notes fit into one beat (hearts representing beats) by placing the note/s on top of the heart. For the younger children I sing a song like ‘Rain, rain, go away’. I map out the song with the children using the large hearts and notes teacher set and then I send the children off in partners to map it out together with a small student set between them. For the older children I use the hearts and notes sets to help them to compose their own rhythms. Students create their own songs and perform them to the grade using hand percussion instruments. For my senior children I ask them to create the rhythms first and then use a glockenspiel to transfer the rhythms into a song and then write the song on a staff.
