Here is an easy way to teach your students how to write a text dependent analysis essay! This can be used as a whole group, small group, or individual activity.
Students begin by reading an informational passage on barn owls.
Then they read a text dependent analysis writing prompt. (The prompt aligns with Common Core ELA standards for fourth grade).
Students are provided with pre-written paragraphs to choose from to construct a response. The final essay will consist of three paragraphs, and the students are given three choices for each paragraph (three choices for paragraph number 1; three for number 2, etc.)
Either working alone or with a group, students will read and think about the response paragraphs to determine if they effectively answer the question. This guided lesson helps students to focus on what the question is asking and whether the responses meet the requirements. This is a great first step in teaching children to write their own TDA essays!
The response paragraphs can be cut out and pasted on colored index cards for a more colorful, hands-on approach.
