This winter-themed SmartBoard Notebook file gives your students an opportunity to work on problem solving skills while developing the following common core math standards:
2.OA.1. Addition and Subtraction Word Problems Within 100
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
2.NBT.5. Add and Subtract Within 100 Using Strategies
Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
This file follows Sue O'Connell's 'focus on the question' format. I use one slide each day in a whole group setting, allowing students to show work on individual whiteboards. We really practice thinking aloud and sharing our strategies with the emphasis on the process, not just the answer. Please see my free 'Questioning Prompts' to support teacher questioning.
Gradually releasing responsibility (teacher modeling, whole group, partners, individual) allows students to work towards independence. The data remains the same on each slide giving them ample opportunity to work with more difficult questions (two-step, missing addend, etc.). The last slide can be printed to provide a formative/summative assessment of your student's problem solving progress.
Editable SmartBoard file allows you to numbers to adjust problems to student needs and increase/decrease difficulty.
