I like to introduce five words a week and then add them to the word wall but many people start out the year with the previous year’s word wall words already on display. Depending on what grade you teach, you may want my Kindergarten Word Wall-Editable!
to begin the year. However, if you teach first or second grade this is the product for you.
This product was designed to help students automatically recognize sight/high frequency words through auditory clues. This product can be used in a variety of ways.
Using your word wall or the one included and giving each child a white board, you read off the clues. The kids then write the word they think is correct on their white board and then hold it up for you to see. This product comes with an editable word wall that you can either add to the words I have or re-create your own on the template I’ve designed.
Another way to use this product is to have each child have their own copy of the word wall. As you read the clues, they locate it quickly, raise their hand and give the answer.
Yet another way to use this product is in a small group or as part of an intervention. Use the same format as mentioned but in a small group or with a parent volunteer or a classroom aide/para-educator who can work one-on-one. It could also be used as a literacy center provided that the kids can read the clues. There are also blank clue cards for you to add in your own clues if you would like.
The idea behind word walls is that they are interactive and that kids have multiple opportunities to interact with words that they use in their writing and see in the books they read. With this product they will do just that.
This can be used with whole and small group as well as one on one. You can also use this during down time or as a time filler! Great to leave as part of your sub plans as it requires no prep!
The clues are written in first person. For example, “I have three letters. I have one vowel.”
To use: I would print, laminate and cut apart. Next, punch a hole in the corner and put them on a ring and hang them next to your word wall.
This product contains words that are commonly found in text levels D-I (Fountas & Pinell) and would mostly be used within a first grade classroom. They are as follows:
about after again air all along also always another answer any around away back because been both but came carry change come day did does don’t down earth even every eye father find first for four from fun give going good got great had has have head here high him his I if into is just kind know large learn light little long look near night not now of off often on one only other our out over people put right said saw school should some something that to the too their two them then they thought through there those walk where want who was why water will well with went world were word what would when you your year
The clues use vocabulary that kids should know or will know by using this product: vowels, consonants, syllables, verbs, adjectives, nouns, twin vowels, homophones, sound-alike words, digraphs, etc. Some clues are easy and some are more difficult. This product is highly engaging and an effective way to introduce new vocabulary while learning how to spell and recognize commonly used and high frequency words!
