When looking at the ELA Common Core State Standards, regardless of the specific grade level, it is easy to see that the ability for students to understand some key words and concepts that are the foundation of the expectations of the CCSS would be extremely helpful. I have pulled 28 terms from the standards that are common across 5th through 8th grade and created a study sheet that can be given to each child. In addition, I've created a baseball themed game, called Home Run OR Strike Out, to review these important terms and definitions.
This game is so easy to set up and meant for small groups of 3 - 5 players, so make as many copies of the label and game pieces as you need for centers or whole classes broken into small groups. Students will take turns naming terms that are defined by the slips that they pick...hoping to pick a lucky Home Run, while dreading the Strike Outs! The person with the most definition strips in his or her hands at the end of 15 minutes is the winner of that round. Having a few sets of the game set up and ready to go makes spontaneous review easy and fun!
This download includes:
- A Home Run OR Strike Out label to be used on a bag, can or box
(This container will hold the pieces for the game.)
- 3 “Home Run” pieces
- 3 “Strike Out” pieces
- 28 definition slips
- An answer key with terms and definitions
- A foldable study guide
- Complete directions
Be sure to download the preview to see the terms being reviewed and see directions for game play. Similar to my Trick OR Treat game for Hallowen, this game is always one of my students' favorites! Thank you for stopping by and considering this purchase. As always, any feedback is greatly appreciated!
