A Variety of ELA Centers for Second Grade

This pack was created to provide simple and engaging activities to teach a variety of activities. All the activities relate to the “farm” theme and are not seasonally related. Nine ELA centers are included. Some activities include differentiation to include different levels of difficulty for the center. Recording sheets are provided for each center. The centers are available in color and in black and white. Click below to go to the activity.

The following centers are included:

• Synonym and Antonym Chicks- Students draw a chick card and decide if the word pair is a synonym or antonym and sort the cards. Two versions of the activity are included. The first activity has picture and words on each card. The second card has only words.
• Plowing a Field of Vowels- Students draw a card with a word and sort it as a short or long vowels.
• A Barnyard of ABC Order- Students sort words in ABC order. Two versions of the activity are included. The first activity includes alphabetizing to the first letter. The second card has alphabetizing to the second letter.
• Haystacks of Compound Words- Students draw a chick card and determine the compound word and match it to the card with the compound word. Two versions of the activity are included. The first activity has only pictures each card. The second card has only words.
• Barn Full of Contractions- Students draw a card and determine the contraction made from the two words and match it to the card with the contraction.
• Silo of Subject and Predicate- Students draw a card and read the sentence. Students then sort the underlined part of the sentence into subject or predicate.
• Problem and Solution Pastures- Students read a story card and determine the problem and solution of each story.
• Text Features with Fact Files- Students draw a nonfiction “fact card” and answer questions about the text. Two cards are included. One card is about cows and another is about chickens.
• Sowing the Seeds of Sequencing- Students put together a puzzle with a story and sequencing the pictures to the story. Then students order sequencing cards of the story. Finally, students record the sequence of the story, in their own words. Three versions are included: planting flowers, eating a watermelon, and picking apples.

Common Core Standards Addressed

• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.5- Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.A- Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words.
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1- Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.1
Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.5
Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.2.E
Consult reference materials, including beginning dictionaries, as needed to check and correct spellings.
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.4.D
Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of compound words (e.g., birdhouse, lighthouse, housefly; bookshelf, notebook, bookmark).
