PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Differentiated ELA Centers with EASY Teacher Prep!

This pack was created to support independent activities for the literacy block. It contains 11 differentiated activities that are slightly different than my other centers. Instead of creating one task with several different levels of difficulty cards, the activities are differentiated by either the complexity of the recording sheet and task or by the actual readability of the task. I made this change to help teachers create meaningful, differentiated centers, while requiring less time to prepare and create! Another new feature I added to this pack is a printable resource poster for EACH center!

The centers include:

• Cornucopia of Compound Words-The students will find the compound words. The cards have words. Students will match the words to create a compound word. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students to create and record the compound words. The second recording sheet requires students to create and record the compound words and use them in a sentence.

• Possessive Pumpkin Puzzlers- The student will match the puzzle pieces to find the correct possessive noun. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students to create and record the possessive noun. The second recording sheet requires students to create and record the possessive noun and use it in a sentence.

• Celebrating Capitalization-The student will sort the cards to show sentences that have correct or incorrect capitalization. The first recording sheet requires students to identify correctly and incorrectly capitalized sentences. The second recording sheet requires students to identify correctly and incorrectly capitalized sentences and then circle the letters that need to be capitalized in the incorrect sentences.

• Gobbling Up Great Sentences- Students choose cards with different question words (Why?, When?, How?, Doing What?, and Where?) and use the answer to expand a given sentence. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students to expand the given sentence by answering one question on the card. The second recording sheet requires students to expand the given sentence by answering two questions on the card.

• A Serving of Synonyms- Students match cards with a word to the synonym on the recording sheet. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students to find the synonym on the card that matches the recording sheet and has picture cues. The second recording sheet requires students to find the synonym on the card that matches the recording sheet without picture cues.

• Autumn Antonyms- Students match cards with a word to the antonym on the recording sheet. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students to find the antonym on the recording sheet that matches the recording sheet and has picture cues. The second recording sheet requires students to find the antonym on the recording sheet that matches the recording sheet without picture cues.

• Be a Literary Reading Detective- Students read a literary passage and then can either answer questions about the passage, or can use question stem cards, to create and answer their own questions about the passage. There are three levels of the passage (Beginning 2nd , Mid 2nd,, End 2nd) and two different versions of the recording sheet.

• Be an Informational Reading Detective- Students read an informational passage and then can either answer questions about the passage, or can use question stem cards, to create and answer their own questions about the passage. There are three levels of the passage (Beginning 2nd , Mid 2nd,, End 2nd) and two different versions of the recording sheet.

• A Turkey’s Trouble- Students will determine the point of view of the hunter and the turkey in a short passage. Two leveled passages (beginning 2nd and mid 2nd) are included. The recording sheets are not differentiated. Students will draw a card and answer the question on the card.

• A Crop of Context Clues- Students will draw a card and determine the meaning of the underlined and bolded word. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students to choose the meaning of the unknown word from a multiple choice bank. The second recording sheet requires students to write in the meaning of the unknown word.

• Sailing into Main Idea- Students read cards with passages on them and determine the main idea. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students to choose the main idea from a multiple choice bank. The second recording sheet requires students to write in the main idea.


Teacher’s Helpers Included!

This is an additional pack of teacher’s helpers to make your literacy block as smooth as possible! Included in this file is:


• Center Icons for Rotations or Bin Labels- These are square labels that match each of the centers’ cover sheets. These are perfect for center rotations or for labeling bins.
• Center/ Work Stations Menu or Cover Sheet- I created this sheet for students to check off as they complete the center/work station each day. They can also be used as a daily or weekly reflection piece for students.
• Student’s Reflection Rubric- At the end of the week, students have a simple rubric to complete that allows them to reflect on their effort and understanding.
• Simple Grading Sheet- This is a simple sheet for teachers to staple to the top of all of one student’s centers. There is a checklist of all the centers and teachers can score all of the centers for one student. There are four checklists to a sheet.
• Teacher Check Sheet- Editable checklist to mark off if students have turned in all the centers in this pack.

• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.F Produce, expand, and rearrange complete simple and compound sentences (e.g., The boy watched the movie; The little boy watched the movie; The action movie was watched by the little boy).
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.2.A Capitalize holidays, product names, and geographic names.
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.2.C Use an apostrophe to form contractions and frequently occurring possessives.
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies.
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.4.A Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
• CSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.4.D Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of compound words (e.g., birdhouse, lighthouse, housefly; bookshelf, notebook, bookmark).
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.2 Identify the main topic of a multiparagraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.6 Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a different voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.
