As a new teacher, I struggled to know WHAT to teach! Over the years, I have developed a plan, and this is it! The entire ELA department at my school has adopted this plan in order for our students to spend their time learning SKILLS instead of TEXTS. Students will learn all of the Common Core State Standards (except for Speaking and Listening) and be State Test ready by the end of the year!
This year-long "big picture" plan is a list of nine READING and eight WRITING skills that are applicable to grades 6-12. They can be used in conjunction with ANY fiction and nonfiction texts!
This is meant to be used as a STARTING POINT. For each skill, you will need a good selection of texts and resources with which to teach your lessons.
I hope this helps you get a good idea of WHAT to teach in your ELA class this year!
