Teaching (and learning) grammar can be so dry! Add an element of fun and competition into your classroom!
This activity is inspired by the classic game Scattergories - Pick a topic ("classroom", "the beach", or even a letter or color!), and students will brainstorm a list of words that connect to the topic and sort them by the part of speech. In the the 6th grade, I give groups just 60 seconds to brainstorm their list. BUT HERE IS THE TWIST! When groups compare answers, they only get points for UNIQUE answers. If two or more groups write the same word, everyone has to cross it out! My students LOVE the challenge!
These game boards can be used as individual or group activities, and can be used at any point throughout your students' learning of the 8 Parts of Speech. Use it as a review of a particular part of speech, or as a pre-test review game!
