I LOVE to shock my students and give them a homework assignment on the first day of school! They are always surprised and excited to get started with the school year.
Well, the purpose of this assignment is for students to find purpose in their learning. I teach middle school ELA and every year I am asked, "Why do we have to learn English when we already know how to speak it?" This homework assignment is my answer.
The students need to interview an adult on how they use reading, writing, listening, and speaking in their daily lives. I assign this on the first day of school and we make a large classroom chart with their results on the second day of school.
Ultimately, it provides the students with a purpose and relevancy for the subject and motivates them for the upcoming school year. I hope this colorful, visually appealing assignment is helpful to you!
