This ELA packet is designed to help your students learn just a little more about some awesome and fantastic African-American women who were leaders of the past.
Appropriate for Grades 4, 5, 6
Page 1/2/3 Editing (5 paragraphs each about a woman in African-American history)
Page 4: Word Search (11 names of women in African-American history)
Page 5/6/7/8: Taking Notes and Researching (using the 11 names they were just introduced to)
Page 9: Matching (use their notes to match each name with the description)
++Use the editing pages as Morning Work. Students will learn more about five fantastic pioneers in Black history.
++Use the Word Search to introduce students to some names they likely won't be familiar with.
++After they have done the search, invite the students to research each of those names and make some notes about each. This helps students learn, practices with note-taking, and they will use what they wrote to complete the matching section on the last page.
++You may want students to further research one of the women they have started to learn about. Consider having pairs of students work together to compile more information, photographs, and interesting facts about one of the women, and presenting what they learn to the class.
